INTERNATIONAL MOBILITY PROGRAM
What is the International Mobility Program?
The International Mobility Program (IMP) allows Canadian employers to hire temporary workers without a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). The LMIA is waived as these temporary workers are expected to provide:
- broader economic, cultural or other competitive advantages to Canada
- reciprocal benefits for Canadians and permanent residents
What are the work permit streams available under the International Mobility Program?
Work Permit streams available under Canada’s International Mobility Program are:
- International free trade agreements, including the USMCA and GATS
- Business visitors and professionals who do not intend to enter the Canadian labour market
- Intra-company transfers
- Senior managers, executives, and individuals with specialized knowledge that can provide significant economic, social, or cultural benefits to Canada
What are the requirements to apply for a work permit under the International Mobility Program?
Requirements may vary depending on the stream you are applying for. Generally speaking, the following are required to apply for a work permit in Canada:
- a valid job offer and contract of employment
- proof of financial support
- proof of qualifications in education, training, and experience to perform the job required
- certification, registration, or license if working in a regulated profession
- proof of intent to leave Canada at the end of the authorized period of stay
- a visitor visa or electronic travel authorization, if applicable
- police certificate and medical examination may be required
How long is the processing time and what are the application fees?
Processing times vary depending on the number of applications being processed, and usually takes 5-6 weeks.
The application fee for a work permit under the Canadian International Mobility Program is $150. Biometrics may be required.
What are the key considerations in submitting an application?
The requirements might look simple on paper, but often applications are rejected because the documents submitted were inaccurate, incomplete, or non-compliant. Here are some key considerations when applying for a work permit under the International Mobility Program:
- Is your employer qualified to hire a temporary worker under the IMP?
- How do you show adequate proof of your ability to do the job and necessary contribution to the workforce?
