STUDY IN CANADA
How do you qualify for a study permit to Canada?
You may qualify for a study permit to Canada if you:
- are enrolled at a designated learning institution
- show proof of funds for your tuition fees, living expenses, and return trip to your home country
- are able to submit police clearance and medical exam results
What is the fast-track Student Direct Stream?
If you live in the China, India, Morocco, Pakistan, Philippines, Senegal, or Vietnam, you can get your study permit faster under the Student Direct Stream. To qualify, you will need the following:
- a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) from a Canadian financial institution of C$10,000, in lieu of proof of funds for living expenses
- fully paid tuition fees for your first year of study, instead of a down payment
- language test results of a minimum band score 6 (IELTS) or CLB 7 (CELPIP/TEF), unless you graduated from a Canadian high school
- upfront medical exam
Can you work while studying in Canada?
It depends on your program and learning institution. Not all programs and learning institutions can qualify for a post-graduation work permit, which is the permit you need to be able to stay and work in Canada after you finish your program.
If your program and learning institution qualifies you for a post-graduation work permit, the duration of the work permit may be matched to the length of your study, up to a maximum of 3 years. For more information on the post-graduation work permit, please click here.
Can you bring your family members to Canada on a study permit?
Yes, your spouse or common-law partner can accompany you to Canada, along with your dependent children. Your spouse or partner may also be eligible for an open work permit, and can work full-time at any company in Canada.
How can a Canadian education help me become a permanent resident of Canada?
Graduating from a Canadian institution opens more doors for permanent residency, as it gives you more points and increases your eligibility for the federal Express Entry system. Under Provincial Nominee Programs, your Canadian education makes you more qualified to apply to the province or territory.
How long is the processing time and what are the processing fees?
Processing times vary depending on the type of application you submit and where it is processed. Usually, processing takes 2-3 months. Under the Student Direct Stream, processing is approximately 4-6 weeks.
The processing fee for a study permit is C$150. For accompanying family members, each person’s processing fee is C$100. A group rate of C$500 is also offered for a family of 5 or more.
What are the key considerations in submitting an application?
The requirements might look simple on paper, but often applications are rejected because the documents submitted were inaccurate, incomplete, or non-compliant. Here are some key considerations when applying for a study permit to Canada:
- What type of studies qualify for a post-graduation work permit?
- Does the duration of your studies qualify for a work permit?
- How can you ensure you have provided enough proof that you will return to your home country when your visa expires?
