POST-GRADUATION WORK PERMIT
What is a post-graduation work permit?
A post-graduation work permit allows international students who have graduated from a participating Canadian post-secondary institution to gain Canadian work experience. Canadian work experience helps support an application for permanent residency in Canada. This is an open work permit that allows the student to apply with any employer.
How do you qualify for a post-graduation work permit?
To qualify for a post-graduation work permit, you must graduate from a public institution or a recognized degree program at a private institution. These institutions may be a university, college or a Collège d’enseignement général et professionnel (an educational institution in Quebec).
What programs of study do not qualify for a post-graduation work permit?
The following programs of study are ineligible for a post-graduation work permit:
- an English as a second language or French as a second language course
- general interest or self-improvement courses
- a course at a private career college
What is the validity period of the post-graduation work permit?
A post-graduation work permit may be valid anywhere between 8 months to 3 years, depending on the length of the program of study completed in Canada. In most cases, if you graduate from an 8-month certificate program, you could be eligible for an 8-month work permit. If you graduate from a 2-year program, you could be eligible for a work permit that is valid for at least 2 years and up to 3 years. 3 years is the maximum validity of the post-graduation work permit, even if your program is longer than 3 years.
Can you apply for an extension of a post-graduation work permit?
No, you cannot. You are allowed only 1 post-graduation work permit in your lifetime.
How long is the processing time and what are the processing fees?
Processing times vary depending on how you submit your application and where it is processed. Usually, in-Canada applications take about 3 months.
The processing fee for a post-graduation work permit is C$255. Biometrics may be required.
What are the key considerations in submitting an application?
The requirements might look simple on paper, but often applications are rejected because the documents submitted were inaccurate, incomplete, or non-compliant. Here are some key considerations when applying for a post-graduation work permit in Canada:
- When is the right time to apply for a post-graduation work permit for optimum success?
- When should you start working to optimize your work experience?
- Can you work anywhere, and in any type of job?
